Interested in a Phd in Management?

What can I do with a PhD in Management?

  • Most management PhD programs seek to train individuals to become professors of management in research-productive universities. It is rare that PhD programs are tailored at training practitioners and consultants. If you are interested in this type of career, you might consider a DBA program or a Master’s degree or Phd in Industrial/Organizational Psychology.

What do Management Professors do?

  • Every university, department, and job is slightly different, but generally speaking management professors teach, conduct research, and engage in service.

    • Teaching: Most management professors teach management courses, but some might also teach general business courses. The amount of teaching that professor do depends on the type of job—some jobs are more teaching heavy and some jobs are more research heavy.

    • Research: Almost all tenure-track management professors engage in academic research. Academic research typically involves asking research questions and making specific hypotheses on topics that interest you and are also of interest to managers, collecting data to test those hypotheses, writing up the results in a journal article format, and submitting to academic journals with the hopes of being published. Another part of the job that sometimes falls under research, but can also fall under service, includes mentoring and training students (undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD)

    • Service: Service can be devoted to ones university, college, department, or even to the field at large and involves activities that help generate new, or sustain, build, and/or promote existing, academic endeavors. Service can include reviewing and/or editing for conferences and journals, serving on committees, chairing or being part of theses and dissertations, and many other tasks,

Where can I find a list of schools that grant PhDs in Management?

  • To my knoweldge, there is not an exhaustive list of PhD-granting institutions for Management, but there are lists of Departments of managements, many of which do have PhD programs. For instance, the TAMUGA rankings are a joint effort by Texas A&M and UGA to rank management departments based on research productivity (i.e., number of publications). See that list here: https://www.tamugarankings.com/

suggestions for GMAT/GRE resources

Magoosh

  • Note: They often run specials and discounts for their products. Sometimes universities will also help reduce the cots of using these kind of products--but you have to ask around to different offices for help and support across campus (i.e., career services offices, academic advisors, etc.).

Manhattan Prep

  • Note: Manhattan Prep books can sometimes be obtained via 2nd hand book sellers at a discount (or even at your local library). If you want access to the computer adaptive practice tests, just buy one of the books that most interests you/skill area you need to focus on and it will provide you with a code to access the practice tests in the back of the book.
